MANILA – An emotional Kris Aquino appeared tearful before cameras on Sunday as she thanked members of the family of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos for offering prayers for her mother, former president Corazon "Cory" Aquino.

“I never thought that the time would come but I say thank you to the Marcoses for really praying for mom. I felt the sincerity,” said Kris on the ABS-CBN entertainment show “The Buzz." She is the youngest daughter Cory Aquino.

During her last conversation with her mother, Kris said the former leader had already forgiven her political enemies. Likewise, the actress said her mother had also asked for their forgiveness.

“During my last conversation, I asked mom, sabi ko, ‘Mom, when I addressed the people, gusto mo ba sabihin ko you want everybody at peace?’ She said, ‘yes,’” Kris said.

Cory Aquino, who died at the age of 76 on Saturday (August 1) after battling colon cancer, led millions of Filipinos in protests against the late dictator Marcos in a popular revolt in 1986. She took over the presidency shortly afterwards, and is widely credited for restoring democracy in the Philippines.

Cory Aquino, who described herself as "a simple housewife" was catapulted to prominence when her husband, former Sen. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., was assassinated while alighting from his plane in 1983. Ninoy Aquino was one of the key figures who opposed the Marcos regime.

Cory Aquino reluctantly agreed to become the opposition figurehead and ran against Marcos, who jailed thousands during his 20-year rule, in "snap" elections during 1986.

Massive cheating by Marcos allies during the elections ignited the revolt that eventually sent the dictator fleeing into exile and installed Aquino as president. With a report from Agence France-Presse
